As one of the classic guidebooks to Britain basically said, “Of course you should see Stonehenge, but I have to warn you, it looks just like it looks.”
True. I think it might actually look more impressive from farther away.
It’s easy to see, though, how this could have been a sacred site for Neolithic peoples. There’s something arresting about the simplicity and strength of the standing stones– it’s more powerful than the gilded fussiness of many cathedrals.
We were lucky enough to be there on a quiet morning when the skies were clear, the sun was shining, and the tourists were sparse. If you ever visit, I recommend you try for a crisp winter morning like this one.
