So I spent most of the last week leading Energize4Girlz, our local girls’ holiday club, which pretty much meant I was covered in glitter the entire week. The theme for the week was “Today is Awesome!” and we spent time talking about how you can choose to be happy, and how it’s better for your health and mental performance when you’re positive (did you know smiling reduces stress and tricks your brain into a better mood?) We talked about how your mood is contagious (your happiness has three degrees of influence: your good mood makes your kids 25% happier, which makes their teacher happier, which makes the janitor happier…)
And we talked about how being thankful for three things every day helps remind you that Today is Awesome. (Also scientists say it helps you sleep better.)
We wanted to have a really tangible way to reinforce this with the girls, so we gave everyone three slips of paper that said “Today I’m Thankful For…” and had them write down three specific things they were grateful for. Then we gave everyone a treasure chest for their thankfulness slips and had them decorate it. And we sent everyone home with enough little strips of thankfulness paper to fill in for the next three weeks, because apparently that’s how long it takes to form a habit.
I’ve actually really enjoyed choosing my three things every day and watching the treasure chest fill up—it’s very satisfying to have such a physical representation of how many things I have to be grateful for. I hope some of the girls have carried on doing it as well! We told everyone if they were having a bad day, they could open it up and remind themselves of the good things in their lives, or they could wait til it gets full and then unfold all the papers to celebrate how wonderful life is!
If forming a thankfulness habit intrigues you, why not give it a go? What are you thankful for today?
